What a Tennessee licence actually means
Tennessee requires a contractor licence for any project valued at $25,000 or more, materials and labour combined. Below that, a separate Home Improvement licence is required for residential remodelling work between $3,000 and $24,999 — but only in certain counties, and three of them sit squarely in our coverage area: Davidson, Rutherford and Robertson.
The practical takeaway for a homeowner is simple. Ask for the licence number, ask what classification it carries, and check it yourself against the Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors register. A licence is not a guarantee of good work, but the absence of one on a job that needs it tells you everything you need to know.
The same goes for insurance. General liability and workers' compensation certificates should come to you from the insurance carrier, not as a photocopy from the contractor. Every company printed in the magazine has been through this check before their ad ran — but it is your house, and it is worth doing again.
- Get every bid in writing, with the scope itemised.
- Never pay the full amount up front. A deposit is normal; the balance follows the work.
- Ask who pulls the permit — if nobody does, the liability lands on you.
- Ask for two recent local references, then actually call them.

Category questions
Which trades does Nashville Home Pros cover?
Nine core residential categories: kitchen remodel, bathroom remodel, roofing, flooring, hvac, painting, plumbing, electrical, landscaping. If your project falls outside those, choose "Other / Not Sure" on the estimate form and describe it — most residential work is covered by someone in one of the two editions.
Do I need a licensed contractor in Tennessee?
For most residential work, yes. Tennessee requires a contractor licence for any project valued at $25,000 or more. In Davidson, Rutherford, Robertson, Shelby, Knox, Hamilton, Bradley, Haywood and Marion counties, a Home Improvement licence is also required for residential remodelling work between $3,000 and $24,999. Verify any licence at the Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors before you sign.
How many companies hold each category?
Two per category, per zone. That cap is why we can send your request to a short list instead of auctioning it, and it is also why we can afford to be selective about who gets in.
Can I request more than one category at once?
Submit the form once per category. Contractors quote what they actually do, and a roofer and a kitchen remodeler need two different conversations — separate requests get you better answers from both.
What if I only want a small repair?
Say so in the message box. Some advertisers take service calls and small repairs, others only take full replacements, and telling us up front saves everyone a wasted visit.
